The Bannister Effect of WEM

Until May 6, 1954, running a mile in less than 4 minutes was impossible. This was exactly when, based on a whole new way of thinking and training, Roger Bannister was the first athlete to run a mile that fast – in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.

Bannister’s performance was what experts considered to be physically impossible. Not making a secret out of his new way of training, fellow athletes followed his lead soon after. Nowadays, running a mile in four minutes is standard for distance runners.

The crux: It was merely impossible for the human mind to think such achievements were reachable. Until Bannister proved the status quo wrong, that is.

3Fiftynine and WEM
